On Your Marks, Get Set, Go as this years Summer's Purple Run

Countdown Begins

30th June 2017

It was on your marks, get set and go this week as iCare, organisers of this year’s Purple Run, set the official stopwatch countdown to this year’s event at Gosford Park on August 12.

At a major launch event held at Homecare Independent Living’s headquarters at Callan House, Milford, and attended by businesses, sports clubs, community groups and supporters from across the area, iCare confirmed that this year’s run will once again include three popular options to suit every age and ability – 10K, 5K and the 3K Family Fun Run.

There’s even more excitement on the race card for business participants who for the first time can check the strength of their competitive spirit by taking part in a timed team challenge.

iCare is hoping to build on the outstanding attendance of more than 500 participants who took part in the inaugural energic challenge last year and who raised thousands of pounds for important local community causes.

Representing iCare, Mairead Mackle, Chief Executive of Homecare Independent Living which backs the charity, said:

“It’s time to dust off your trainers, find your running socks and shorts as the Purple Run at Gosford Park is back – and it’s going to be even bigger and better than last year. Now in its third year, the Purple Run has attracted runners of all abilities, from the super-quick to the sociable and it has already raised thousands of pounds for those in need.”

This year, monies raised through registration and sponsorship for those who take part will be awarded to the three worthy charities. These include Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, in memory of local girl Lesley Ann McCarragher and for stillbirth charity Sands to support bereaved families attending Craigavon Hospital supported by the Rafferty family

In addition, funds raised as part of the 3K Family Fun Run will go to support the Fight for Alfie campaign. Alfie is a happy, fun loving, typical little boy who was recently diagnosed with fatal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and his family want to help find a cure.

Mairead added:

“We want the proceeds of the purple run to be a benefit to the entire community and Each of these campaigns share this goal so We are delighted to be able to play our part

We hope that by taking part in the Purple Run 3K Family Fun Run, and all the other events that we can add to the great work already started by these campaigns.

With participation and sponsorship raised across all the Purple Run events, we hope to make a real difference to the lives of many. What’s also important to remember that it’s a really fantastic day out for everyone and we hope that everyone can get involved.”
