Putting Smuddles and Kisses into Life's Toughest Adventures
4rd May 2018
It’s often difficult to know where to begin when so much has been lost, yet so much accomplished in the midst of such devastating heartbreak! Let me take off from 2008.
The most precious girl in the world entered my life in November 2008. From that moment, life as I knew it was perfect - until, September 2012. Eva who had been feeling unwell on and off for a number of weeks took a seizure and eventually after numerous weeks and tests, was diagnosed with a very large and rare brain tumour which had already spread around her brain and down her spine.
I don’t believe I’ll ever forget the Sunday morning a few weeks into treatment when Eva’s hair came into her hand as she scratched her head. She looked up at me
with those gorgeous blue eyes, the look of innocence possessed only by a child and with a gasp and surprised look on her face she asked me could I, "... put it back in?” At that moment I knew my life was changed forever and I would never be the same person again. I took the hair out of Eva’s hand and I sat her on the bed. Smiling at her through my heartbreak, I explained that some boys and girls have hair that goes on an adventure and this was “Eva’s hairs time to take an adventure of its own.” So, Eva’s hair now became known as ‘Hair’, a very real character in the family household! The stark reality soon hit that there was very little available by way of children's literature which would help Eva to understand what was happening and why her hair was gone! So, I embarked on a journey with the goal being that Eva would receive a very special Christmas present - a book, for her about her, called "The Adventures of Eva's Hair".
As fate would have it, devastatingly, the publication date of this book became the day of Eva's burial. As life would have it, I was to be blessed with 7 all too short, but sublimely incredible years, of thee most loved filled, awe inspiring, bubbly little character with the warmest personality all contained within my most precious best friend and my real life hero, Eva. Rocked to the core, heartbroken and in a state of disbelief, Eva’s legacy was born - her destiny was, and is to be, one of helping others. With three print sell outs of The Adventures of Eva’s Hair and 27 awards to include Young Enterprise Best Product NI and UK as well as European Runner Up, £10,000 was donated to three local children's charities one of which was iCare.
Now, two years later missing Eva’s cuddles and kisses, or as Eva liked to say "smuddles and kisses" more than ever before, and having an innate desire to make sure that the world knows the magic and love of our girl; we've registered Eva's Adventures I am launching our very first professionally illustrated children’s picture book, 'Eva Meets Dr Mac'. This epic and fun loving hospital adventure tells the tale of Eva from diagnosis through treatment in a fun-filled, adventure packed, witty verse manner - just as Eva would have wanted, adored and been proud of. 'Eva Meets Dr Mac' is just the beginning of our epic Eva tales as we embark on a journey of putting smuddles and kisses into every adventure that children face.
Adventure onto our website www.evasadventures.com, or social media pages @EvasAdventures and journey with us, helping to spread Eva's legacy - making hers a worldwide household name. Books can be purchased online and from our social media page with a percentage of the profits going to iCare, a charity very close to our hearts and to the Make a Wish Foundation UK who granted Eva's wish to meet her beloved Cinderella at the Disney Castle in 2014.
This is only the beginning for Eva's Adventures - we have numerous plans which will provide ways to help the healing process for children like Eva, and families like ours, as we put Eva smuddles and kisses into every adventure that children must take.
