Homecare Independent Living rewarded again for its community Commitment

Homecare Independent Living (HCIL) has been recognised as a leader in social and environmental responsibility by winning the Commitment to Responsible Business of the Year Award at the ABC Business Awards 2017.

HCIL operates the iCare charity, which it founded to empower communities to create a better world through acts of the iCare Wishes programme and it is run entirely by its staff. Since its inception, the company has raised more than £250,000 to fund a range of initiatives designed to create a long-lasting impact and targeted community support.

The prestigious accolade, sponsored by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council which hosted the event, was presented to Homecare Independent Living chief executive Mairead Mackle who accepted it on behalf of her dedicated team.

Last month, the Milford, Co Armagh-based company which provides a unique mix of integrated services, including health and social care, housing and support services, was awarded the Commitment to the Community award at Northern Ireland’s Family Business Awards 2017.

HCIL Chief Executive, Mairead, Mackle said:

“Winning these awards shows just how our strong our dedicated team has made responsible thinking part of how we do business. We are deeply committed to investing in and supporting our communities and I’m delighted that we have clearly and confidently demonstrated just what we can be achieved when responsibility comes first.”

Newly appointed Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Gareth Wilson, said:

“On behalf of the council, I extend heartfelt congratulations to all our winners at what was a landmark event, not only for our borough but for Northern Ireland. These awards have brought our business expertise, entrepreneurial spirit and our commitment to succeed to the forefront of the corporate community far beyond the borough.”

These Business Awards are a major first for the ABC Borough Council as it reflects the diverse local and regional businesses firmly located in the engine room of Northern Ireland’s economy, from the well-established to start ups, family owned and operated to corporate multinationals.

To date, more than 150 individuals, families and organisations have directly benefited from these “iCare Wishes”. One of the iCare wishes has helped to set up Ben’s Bungalow. Ben has life limiting conditions and suffers from complex needs including severe cerebral palsy, severe visual impairment and continual drainage from his stomach.

He and his family were living in an increasingly unsuitable house to meet Ben’s needs until iCare stepped in. They granted the family a wish and helped to finish the interior of a purpose-built home for Ben and his family, enabling them to move in within a month. Another wish was a brand new state of the art Forest Hideaway activity at Lisanally Special School, Armagh.

To support its community commitment, it runs annual events including Santa’s Gatelodge,‘the ‘Purple Run’ at Gosford Park and ‘Abseil for iCare.’  Last year, more than 700 of our team members provided over 2,000 hours of care, free of charge, by donating the payment for that time to iCare. This contributed to an overall sum of over £7,000 raised in 2015 and £8,000 in 2016. Funds raised are injected directly back into the communities in which the teams live and work.

HCIL was also highly commended as one of Northern Ireland’s best large employers for 2017 and as Employer of the Year.

The company provides services to clients which enables them to continue living in their own homes, including quality domiciliary care, peripatetic and floating support, nursing and continuing care as well as housing services. It supports a staff of more than 1,000 across the island of Ireland.
